Discussion question response 10
Stats are an effective way to bolster your argument but to effetely weave it in to a speech is an art. In my opinion the most effective place to use a stat is right after you it as a general statement. Stating the info as common knowledge and then baking it up with the stat. the worst place to put a stat in my opinion is at the beginning of a speech or a sub point. It makes the delivery of the information less personal. I feel that the presenter is trying to make the numbers do the convincing. Either way making stats flow in a speech is an art.

Hello Fish! How are you planning on using statistics in your coming speech? Also, are you planning on using any other type of supporting materials?
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with you. Saying stats in the beginning of a speech is ineffective and often makes it feel like the presenter is trying to convince the people with numbers. However, in some occasions I also think that stats in a beginning of a speech may be helpful especially if common knowledge or experience is said after. Doing this, I believe, would prove the stat or make the stat more believable or real. Your other points that you make about stats are also very true. Being able to use stats effectively and appropriately in a speech is very important to bolster an argument. Using stats in essays is surely an art especially when making stats flow effortlessly during a speech. Do you plan to mention any stats during your next speech?
